Stamford Little Genius 's Progress Review
Parents were not allowed to bring back the progress review file so I've recorded down as much as I can remember during the parents' meeting session.
- Reagan is attentive in class but he is very soft-spoken.
- Math - Reagan can recognise numbers from 1-30 and recite them at home. However when his teacher tested him that day, he is only willing to recite up to 5 and refused to continue. Well, kids have their mood some days.
- Phonics - Able to recognise and say out the name of all alphabets during the test, got all of them right yeah! When the teacher tested him on the initial sounds that each alphabet made, he got all the sounds right but hesitate during the letter "Q", "V', "W' , "X" .

A Sweet Intro
This blog is dedicated to our darling boy, born prematurely at 29 weeks and miraculously survived all odds during his 57 days in the ICU. We named him Reagan, which means our "Little King", strong and brave enough to fight any battles. He is also our little king whom we worship with a lifetime of our love and kisses. Baby Reagan continues to amaze us with his awesome strength, big personality, joyful laughter and lovely smiles. This is where we share both our learning journeys and all the fun bonding time together.

Reagan's right-brain learning progress (2 yrs 4 months old)
My own observations of Reagan's progress from his two right brain enrichment schools ; Heguru and Happy Train.
HEGURU METHOD
His progress report for this term.
" A shy and soft-spoken boy who stays really focus in class. Good attention span and participates well in class. Reagan has done well in photo memory and linking memory. Able to recognise numbers too. Teacher Qiqi is very proud of him. Mummy continues to do home practice and Reagan will make you proud. "
My observations this term (Heguru)
- He can do tanagram and irorita puzzle well by himself but it'll be better if he can speed up a little haha.
- Most of the time he can get the correct answer for photo memory but I think it is because Heguru's photo memory game is not very difficult for him.
- He is able to follow the instruction well for linking memory and most of the time he is also able to pick the correct cards.
- Pretty good in the ESP game , especially telepathy with mummy.
- And the biggest improvement of all..... Reagan finally understands and tries to attempt MANDALA !!!
2 lessons ago, he finally understood that he is supposed to remember the image that is shown on the screen for that few seconds and put down the same colours as the image shown. No more nonsense scribbling with the crayons! He is not able to get all the colours of the Mandala exactly correct but I'm very excited that he shows effort to attempt it. He will pick 1-2 colours that he can remember and colour them at the correct position.
I was about to give up Mandala actually as I dont really expect him to understand or attempt it at this age, but eventually he did prove me wrong. Probably soon I'll include Mandala in his home practice.
I like the giant colourful charts they use to input the topics (below; Electricity currents and Climates of the world). They also use songs and flashcards at fast speed to go through the main points. I know the topics may seems difficult for a 2 years old to comprehend but since it is right-brain learning, everything is all about inputting and Reagan really enjoys the session.
HAPPY TRAIN
The cute and interesting learning materials which are used in class to input knowlege/concepts really impress me. Reagan is always looking forward to the new games and new learning materials every week.
My observations this term (Happy Train)
- His good attention span and ability to focus are still his strength.
- Can do the memory games by himself, eg. photo memory and pocket memory
- Enjoys the finger-training activities
- Remembers the music notes for the perfect pitch and able to sing when he's at home.
- Fast in picking up the learning concepts inputted during class
-----------------------------
Areas of improvements
- To be more outspoken in class. Although Reagan has an excellent attention span during lesson ,he can be very quiet and always have this serious expression on his face. I wish he can speak up loud and clear, especially in response to the teachers' questions to him.
- To improve on his physical and gross motor skill. He tends to avoid the physical exercise segment during Heguru lesson and seldom follow the actions during Happy-Train's finger play songs. In other words, he can be quite inactive during physical play like gym activities and music dance. Most of the time he prefers to just observe quietly.
- Reagan can hold a writing tool well but still needs my help to hold his hand steadily to write or trace.
-Overall I feel that Reagan needs to work on his confidence too. There are times during the activities in class, even though he has already gotten the answers correctly (eg.during memory games), he would change them if he noticed that his answers were different from his classmates' ones. Yes....he knows how to copy answers! Quite amusing actually haha. I've to always remind and let him understands that it is alright to get the wrong answers as long as he made an effort to try.
I'll definitely continue to encourage him and build up on his confidence :)

Reagan's Enrichment Classes and Learning at 2 Years Old
Now at this stage , Reagan boy is picking up concepts really fast, which of course pressured me to provide him as much input as I can. He has began to start talking in strings of 4-5 words phrases, like recently he said "Didi drinks mama's milk" and "Daddy driving blue car." He finds joy communicating with us , although with strangers he can be a little shy but still very cheeky.
Ever since I was waiting for my labour and confinement to end, I've stopped teaching new words to Reagan. However he has shown signs of recognising and reading new words that I've yet to taught him. Daddy explained that Reagan picked them up from his old and new storybooks that he has been reading to him every night. My mom and I tested Reagan and realised his daddy was right!
All along we've been reading to our boy for the "sake" of reading because he forced us to , otherwise he'll kick up a fuss. We didn't realise he actually remember and learn the words each time we read them to him.
Probably from his experience of words-reading, he has also began to use phonics to help him to break up words that he don't recognised. For eg. If we ask him to read a word that dont make sense such as "Bershalaka", He will try to pronounce it as "Ber ber..sss sss...ke ke". He may say or pronounce the word wrongly but we know he is trying to break up the words using phonics technique, which was a pleasant surprise for us.
Stamford Little Genius (1 x week, 2 hours)
So to further improve on his phonics-reading, I called up Math and Language Phonics class at Stamford school for them to assess him as well to know more about the programme. From what the school explained, their two years old parents-accompanied class are focusing on alphabets (upper and lower case) and the phonics sound of each letter, whereas usually by four years old they use phonics to break up the words for reading. I was told that Reagan has jumped step according to their Phonics learning structure. The consultant managed to guess that I must have been using the flashcard method after he was aware that Reagan can read words at his age. He advised Reagan to be placed in the "Independent class" instead.
However I felt that even though Reagan has mastered all the alphabets and their initial phonics sounds ,at times he still lack that 100% confidence . There are also still some phonics sounds that he has yet to pronounce properly ,such as sound of "L' and "W" and "X". He can easily point to the right letter when we made the phonics sound for him, but he still has difficulty pronouncing them accurately by himself,
In the end, I made the decision to attend the parents-accompanied class to learn with him first, as well as build up his confidence before I proceed him to the next class. I told the school my concerns and arranged with them to only put him into the "Independent Class" probably after a couple of months of attending the "Parents-accompanied class" with him.
The class that I signed him up also consists 1 hour of Math, but daddy attended him during the first day of class while I stayed outside for the programme briefing. Probably next week I'll have a better understand of what they did in Math class.. So far I haven't been focusing much on Math for Reagan, only the usual counting up and down and some flashcards topics on quantity . I like to start on some simple addition and subtraction with him soon.
Heguru (1 x week, 1 hour)
Reagan used to attend Heguru and now he is ready to continue class as I've decided to focus more on his right-braining learning before he turned 3. The 2 years old class is almost similar to the 12 months old class that he used to attend, except for the activities which are much more challenging of course. Reagan got me excited when I realised he understood how to play the Photographic Memory and even the Linking Memory game and able to do them by himself. He is also able to get the right answers for our telepathy game, which shows that we must have very strong bonds and telepathic connection with each other haha. As for the Irorita and Tangram puzzle, he can also complete them without my help, although most of the time he is not fast enough to finish up before the teacher collects back . As usual, he is still in love with the alphabets and phonics, flashcards and songs segment in class.
Reagan is still not able to do the Mandala by himself, and would pick the colours he like instead of following the picture shown on the screen. He is also confused by the Peg memory and Image-training and tends to give a very serious-looking expression haha. For 2 years old class, Flash memory is added inside and even though Reagan knew the answers, he will whisper very softly to me instead of reciting it out loud with the other kids in class. Overall he enjoys his class and would even calls out his teacher's name at home!
Happy Train (1 x week, 1 hour)
HappyTrain is also another right-brain enrichment school which Reagan used to attend. I've decided to put him back into the programme again from this month onwards. As usual he loves the cute props that were used to teach the learning concepts, the hands-on activities in class and of course the vibrant and excited teachers showering him with all the attention.
Reagan shows effort in completing every activity in class and at times he would turn around and smile at me or let me know the game or props that got him excited. Both of us enjoy attending the weekly lesson together very much.
WeeCare (2x week, 3hrs)
Although we've pulled Reagan out from Lorna Whiston Preschool, we've nothing but positive comments about the school. The teachers are awesome, devoted and caring, the environment is conducive and spacious and the curriculum is well-structured and interesting. However, due to his weak immune symptom, putting him in a 5 days weekly preschool gets him sick too frequently. Furthermore, I weigh his enrichment classes more than his preschool, therefore I feel a school that offers flexi-days programme is more suitable for him now.
At WeeCare preschool, he attends 2 mornings, 3 hours each session without parents accompany. At least I get a break from him during two of my busy mornings phew! I also like that there is a huge indoor playground right below their school and the kids get to play there for free!
The first day of school was great. After class, his teacher feedbacked to us how well-behaved Reagan was. He listened and followed instructions well, and played nicely with his classmates. She also mentioned that she noticed Reagan recognises all the colours and can read out the alphabets that day. Great job darling, mummy is so proud of you!
To sum it up, Reagan is attending 3 enrichment classes and 2 mornings of unaccompanied preschool sessions. I know he is enjoying all of them because most of the time at home, he would put on his shoes, points to the door and tells me he wants to go for lesson now haha! This also shows that previously he was really too bored at home when he was not attending any classes during my confinement month.
Darling Reagan, you're doing so well! Mummy is glad to see you having so much fun everyday! Continue to surprise us with things we never knew you could do or understood. Rain you with more hugs and kisses!

Happy Train - Lesson 7
Baby Reagan attempted to do the blowing exercise by himself today, but instead of blowing, he kissed instead haha! He got the correct answer for photo memory and pocket memory again, keep it up! Reagan has been practicing the finger actions of his favorite song "Essey Weensy Spider" the whole week. He loves the song and always wants me to do the action together with him. Today is also the first time he played with playdough and he had fun kneading and pressing it. Near the end of the lesson, the children have a taste of some raw vegetables, which Reagan hated so much that he spited it out haha!
My baby boy chose the car sticker again this week.
Homework- Blow a whistle or pinwheel
- Cut bread into different shapes
- Roll up playdough into balls
- Revise inside, outside, front and back

Happy Train - Lesson 6
Last week was a public holiday so no lesson for that week. This week, we arrived class 5 minutes late but was in time for the blowing exercise.
The theme is still on elephant and for pretend play, the kids were supposed to pick up logs in class like an elephant. Baby Reagan doesn't want to use the fake elephant trunk given by the teacher, he prefers to pick the logs up with his bare hands. He is still pretty attentive to flashcards, although couple of times he turned his head to look at me, just to check if I'm looking at the flashcards too haha.
My dear boy got the answer right for photo memory and pocket memory activities without my hints, great job! One of the motor-skill activity is transferring the cup of small straws to another cup. It was quite a mess because Reagan was eager to pick the straws with his fingers and transfer them to the other empty cup instead of pouring it. So I've to "fight" the cups with him and teach him the right way to play this activity haha.
Once again, towards the end of the class, he whined for me to put him on my lap. He wants to do the games while sitting on my lap, probably my fleshy thighs are more comfy than the plastic chair haha!
oh and I've forgotten to record his homework for this week!

Happy Train - Lesson 4
Baby boy is the first one to reach his class again! He was pretty excited to see the "fruit trees" prepared on the wall for their first game; pretend to be an elephant and go around "plucking" the fruits from the trees.
A few times half-way through the lesson, he turned around and wanted me to put him on his lap. I would prefer him to sit on his own seat so he can do his activity properly.
Reagan loves the lollipops from one of the Math games.
We're supposed to count the lollipops and match the quantity to the correct number on the candy jar. Baby Reagan was more interested in pulling out and putting in the lollipops onto the stand while I do the counting for him.
Homework
- Transfer pastas/bean/water from cup to cup
- Hide and find toy under 2-3 cups
- Find red yellow and blue objects
- Say "Do you like?"
Oct 19, 2013
Happy Train - Lesson 3
Baby Reagan is the first one to reach his class today and as usual he enjoys crawling around and exploring the different classrooms in school. Look at his mischievous face!
I brought him to his seat and when he saw his name tag, immediately he picked it up and looked for his teacher to pass it to her.
Today is mandarin class and I tried to remind myself to speak and give instructions to him purely in mandarin. Although there are still times I forgot and spoke to him in English or English mixed Mandarin haha! I hope baby Reagan can be more exposed to mandarin so he can pick up the language easier when he reached the verbal stage.
Homework
- Play sequence game on shapes
- Categorize stationery and food
- Say/understand "xie xie" & "bu ke qi"
- Match objects to numbers 1-5

Happy Train Year 1 - Lesson 2
Lesson 2 today is conducted in Japanese and my mom was interested to accompany baby Reagan in the first half session of the class. I took over during the 2nd half when the left-brain activities began. My boy as usual enjoyed the finger-training game, inserting pastas into a small jar. After he completed the task and without my prompting, he poured all the pastas out and repeat the activity again all by himself. It's a nice feeling to watch your baby boy so involved in an activity independently and full of confidence.
Homework this week
- Listening to animal sounds
- Drop pasta into jar
- Sort vegetables & fruits
- Say/understand "Thank you"/"You're welcome"
-Match number & quantity 1-5
Some of the Japanese vocabs learned this week
zoo - doubutsuen

rabbit- usagi
owl- fukurou
peacock- kujyaku
carrot - ninjin

Happy Train Year 1 - Lesson 1
Baby Reagan is back for the last term of 1 year old class this year, and I'm glad he still recognizes his teachers after the school break.
Happily in his seat waiting for his lesson to begin
Observation
-Reagan still can't do the blowing exercise (for deep breathing) by himself , till now I'm still demonstrating for him. Today they are suppose to blow down the panda, however he preferred to use his hands instead.
- When the teacher asked the class to choose the answer for the photo memory activity, he was excited and tapped the picture fast and hard. Although he didn't get the right answer today, I was still amused by the confidence he shown when choosing for the right card.
- After every activity, Reagan likes to help me to keep the props and hand them over to the teacher himself
- He followed instruction well for the finger-training game and able to complete the task without my help. He finished the activity fast so we were able to repeat a few more times before returning it to the teacher.
- Today is the first time he is exposed to the concept of sequencing. There is a board with a list of fruits eg. apple orange apple orange apple....and they were supposed to put the right fruit that comes next. Baby Reagan was able to sit still and focused well when I tried to explain the sequence game to him. I'm not sure whether he understood the game but he was able to give me the right fruit for 3 consecutive rounds. Still I think it's just plain lucky guess for him.
- Baby boy enjoys all the new songs for this term too, especially the "5 Little Ducks"
Homework
-Take photos of animals in the zoo
- Imitate animal sounds
- Revise sequence
-Pick & drop clothes pegs

Happy Train - Term Report by Japanese Teacher
His sensei may not be very proficient in English, but she's always so cheerful and hyper. Reagan likes his sensei too. He smiles each time I made him bow his head to greet "Konnichiwa" or wave his hands "sayonara" to his sensei.
I guessed what sensei meant is that although Reagan started late and joined the class from mid-term, he is able to concentrate well , especially when watching her demonstrating how to play the materials in class. He also shows interest in participating the motor-skill activity.
Keep it up my baby boy!

HappyTrain
Baby Reagan has been attending his weekly HappyTrain lessons since last month. Now nearing the end of the current term, he received his first evaluation/term report from his English teacher.
Soon he'll be continuing the new term next month together with his classmate GwenGwen!
Happy Train is is an early-learning brain-stimulation programme that guide parent and child to learn and explore concepts through a variety of games and hands-on activities. The lesson is taught in different language each week. If this week is in English, next week will be mandarin and the following week will be in Japanese.
As usual, baby boy loves his teachers ( always show his signature cheeky smiles) and enjoys his lessons, especially the hands-on activities. Probably after he starts his new term, I'll do an observation report weekly for him.
Baby Reagan you're doing great, keep it up!
